Where did your interest in Corporate Finance begin?

I began my career at KPMG where I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1997.  Whilst at KPMG I worked with a number of leading manufacturing and services businesses and built up a good knowledge and understanding of the challenges they face.

Corporate Finance seemed a logical next step, utilising the skills I had learned and applying them to help individuals and businesses reach and realise their full potential.

I moved into KPMG’s Corporate Finance team and spent two years working in a specialist Private Equity team in Reading advising companies on raising development capital and assisting institutional investors with their investment strategies.


When did you join Gambit

I joined Gambit in 2002 so, outside of the Partners, I am the firm’s longest serving employee.  The firm has always enjoyed an excellent reputation in the market place and, being based locally, was the natural choice for me.

The firm thrives on its entrepreneurial culture and is recognised for its creative approach on advising clients and structuring deals.

Working in a smaller firm gives you genuine exposure to a wide range of corporate finance scenarios.  The variety in the types of businesses you work with, the unique challenges they face and the individuals you work alongside is very stimulating – every day presents a new challenge!

Being a highly experienced team also enables us to provide a very high-level of service to clients.  This differentiates us from our competition and clients value the fact that they get senior level interaction throughout the process.

In the fifteen years since I joined the firm I have had the privilege of working with some excellent businesses on some high profile and landmark transactions, most recently the sale of Wheelies / Tredz to Halfords Group plc and the sale of ACT to Cardiff and Vale College.


What are you known for?

I pride myself on having a very commercial, straight-talking approach.  Experience brings an ability to look at problems analytically and come up with creative, added value solutions and implement these effectively.  Clients value the honest and pragmatic nature of the advice they get.

We work in a very rarefied environment and become trusted business advisers.  Clients look to us to deliver solutions to a number of business challenges – not just the obvious.  Being able to add value and the client recognising that you are doing so is the most rewarding part of the role.

I advise clients on fundraisings, acquisitions and exit planning and disposal strategies.  A key area of interest is advising companies on Value Maximisation Reviews, which identifies key operational and strategic initiatives which will enhance value in preparation for a fundraising, acquisition or exit.

From a sector perspective, I co-lead the firm’s Human Capital team and have significant experience in the healthcare and life sciences, manufacturing and leisure sectors.


What might people not know about you?

I have a keen interest in rugby, cricket, football and cycling and, although my participation has become limited with advancing years, I still enjoy getting out on my road bike when time and weather permits. I try and keep my patriotic support for the England Rugby team quiet in the office.  

I’m also an avid country music fan so try to make time to go to as many concerts with my wife as my diary and bank balance permits!

I am also a keen user of and contributor to social media.  It’s become an essential part of our business in recent years and is a great way of sharing thought leadership, building your network, and finding that next transaction opportunity.
