Where did your interest in Corporate Finance begin?

I studied Zoology at degree level, graduating with first class honours from the University of Bristol in 1993, and at that point I had not given corporate finance a thought.

My professional life began at KPMG when I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1996, and I came 10th in the ICAEW exams and was placed in the ICAEW United Kingdom National Order of Merit. That year, I joined KPMG Corporate Finance and passed the Securities Institute Corporate Finance Examination in 1997.

I worked on a diverse number of projects, in acquisitions, disposals, fundraising and bid defence assignments. I knew then that Corporate Finance was where I wanted to focus. Creating the conditions where businesses could succeed, enabling them to access finance, ensuring that it would be appropriately structured, providing strategic advice and ultimately advising the client on a sale process designed to deliver a premium financial return from the optimal buyer pool.

When did you join Gambit?

I joined Gambit in 1999 as I shared the firm’s vision. The team here think of themselves as entrepreneurs and I realised that although you can be a partner in a large organisation, you will not necessarily run that business.

Being part of a corporate finance boutique gives you a different insight and empathy and I value the depth and involvement you have in projects. I was made Partner in 2003 and there has never been a day when I felt that work is a chore. If you do, it is probably time to leave corporate finance.

What are you known for?

That along with my co-partners we live and breathe the business. It is how it should be as the management teams and business owners we work with do too.

I was awarded Insider Magazine's 'Dealmaker of the Year' in 2005 and 2015 and also 'Corporate Finance Advisor of the Year' in 2008.

I advise on fundraising and MBO transactions, raising development capital, acquisitions, start-ups and restructuring assignments and I act for a number of institutional investors in relation to their portfolio work, with sector experience across leisure, financial services, media, food and consumer goods and business services.

Today I head up Gambit's Human Capital Team and co-lead the Food and Beverage team.

What might people not know about you?

I am a non-executive director of Astutis Limited, a health and safety training company, in addition to various pro bono roles such as Governor of Pendoylan Church in Wales Primary School.
