Unit Group, the Swansea-based engineering company, has acquired West Midlands design specialist Birwelco. Unit’s Engineers and Constructors division acquired Birwelco from Haden Freeman Group in a deal backed by Lloyds.
The acquisition is expected to create 100 new skilled jobs in Wales. Unit forecasts an annual turnover in excess of £50m for its former client Birwelco by 2013. The deal aims to position Unit as an engineering, procurement and construction contractor in the energy and utilities industries.
Bill Ledwood, managing director of Unit Engineers and Constructors, said: “Acquiring one of our biggest clients is a massive step for Unit and puts us on a completely different level. We now have a significant opportunity to target new markets.
He added: “We will be looking to create a global presence for Birwelco with plans to open offices in the United States and the Far East as the company grows. The opportunities the acquisition presents are endless.”
